Meet the Experts
Welcome our hair gurus – Missy Veyret, hair educator and founder of Missy Bridal, Simone Cameron of The Mane Studio, and Giuliana Vitale of Studio G Hair Design.
What inspired you to become a hairdresser?
Missy: I started hairdressing at the age of 12! I volunteered every day after school, on my free days and during school holidays, until I could leave school and start my apprenticeship. I think the real thing that sucked me in and started my love affair with hairdressing was purely the environment. I loved making an impact on people in the long term, as well as the short term connection you made with your clients. I thrive on the loyalty from clients and consistent new creative challenges catered to each individual. It was the perfect balance of connection, creativity, and seeing results through something done with your hands.
Simone: At a young age I would go in with my mum to our cousin’s local hair salon and I would love watching her work, help with cleaning up and just being involved. I was lucky enough to do work experience through school at another local hair salon and I loved every minute of it. I knew then… this is the career I wanted.
Giuliana: I became a hairdresser when I fell in love with the natural colour of ginger hair and the love for perms and volume curls.
How long have you been in the industry?
Missy: I am going into my 16th year of hairstyling. In that time, I have dipped my feet into editorial, weddings, education, fashion, owning a salon, along with makeup and photography. If you ever get bored in this industry – you are doing something wrong, haha.
Simone: I have been hairdressing now for 14 years.
Giuliana: I have been hairdressing for 38 years!
What made you want to open your business?
Missy: The drive to go freelance and venture into salon owning came from my desire to have the freedom to explore all that the industry offers. I like doing multiple and different tasks in the week. It keeps me super passionate and on the edge of my seat.
I also love the challenges that come with taking on new ventures and how much you can really hone your own personal flair when you go out on your own. No glass ceiling when you are reaching high!
Simone: During my apprenticeship I used to always say, “I will have my own salon one day”. It was the pinnacle of my career & I was determined to make it happen.
Giuliana: I always wanted to open my own salon and was lucky enough to have opened my own salon for 5 years this August. My dream was to open a non-tox salon with an alternative twist. My salon is organic and vegan, with Mind, Body, Spirit as my inspo.
What are your top 3 hair health tips/healthy hair habits?
Missy: Tip 1: Invest in your hair products and hair routines! You will see results with consistency. This includes regular trips to your hair appointments and investing in quality haircare (this also includes a great hairbrush!). Take the personalised advice from your hair expert and be consistent at home! It doesn’t take too much – sometimes less is actually more. Doing your routines correctly will give you results! Some of my faves are scalp treatments, moisture masks and gentle hair brushing.
Tip 2: Internal health and beauty is really reflected on the outside! Your haircare starts from within and a nutritious diet plays a significant role in maintaining healthy hair. Incorporate a balanced mix of protein-rich foods such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes, as proteins are the building blocks of hair. Additionally, include plenty of fruits and vegetables, which provide essential vitamins and minerals that support hair growth and scalp health. Foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as avocados, nuts, and seeds, can also promote lustrous hair by nourishing the scalp and hair follicles.
Tip 3: From being in the salon and working with clients, I see firsthand how much stress can impact your hair cycle. This is why I truly believe managing stress levels and your lifestyle can effectively either promote or stump healthy hair. High stress levels can disrupt the natural hair growth cycle, leading to excessive shedding and hair thinning. Engaging in relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can help reduce stress!
Simone: Tip 1: Make heat protectant your best friend, especially if you are using heat on your hair frequently. Tip 2: Concentrate your shampoo (double shampoo is best) on your roots and concentrate conditioner more for your mids to ends. Tip 3: Maintain your hair health from within. What we put in our bodies has a major effect on our hair.
Giuliana: Tip 1: My philosophy is, Moisture-Control-Finish, when purchasing products for home. Tip 2: Be mindful of the integrity of hair, never push the hair more than it can take and be realistic to what can be achieved. Tip 3: Healthy hair starts from the inside out.
What is the biggest hair myth you have heard?
Missy: One of the biggest hair myths I've heard is that cutting your hair frequently makes it grow faster. In reality, cutting your hair doesn't affect its growth rate at the roots. Hair growth occurs from the hair follicles in the scalp, and regular trims only remove the split ends, making the hair look healthier and preventing further damage. Trimming can help to maintain the length and appearance of your hair, but it doesn't accelerate its growth. Hair growth rate is largely determined by genetics, age, overall health and hormonal factors.
Simone: Your hair will grow if you don’t cut it.
Giuliana: A myth that always comes up is "My hair grows really fast!". In fact, everybody loses 100 hairs a day and a hair follicle always pushes it out. The hair grows at a rate of 1 cm per month and a full cycle of hair lasts 2.5 months.
The secret to radiant, healthy hair isn't elusive. It lies in nourishing from the inside out and approaching your self care routine with patience and kindness. Ready to start your path to healthier hair? Browse our 2-Step Vitamin Haircare System.
